Tonight saw the final tournament of Div.4 North. With the C-Team winning the close fought contest for first place beating Dave Brown's (until tonight undefeated!) Welsh Warriors by one point.
A special mention for Tonksie who battled on with his man flu infected body to bring us the win
At the start of play we were second 5 points behind the warriors and 3 points ahead of Pennine C looking to stay second and have a trek down to Cardiff when I should be revising and Mark and Tonksie else would rather be doing slalom. With the Welsh Warriors bringing a slightly weaker team to the table this time everything was to play for.
We started the evening with some reasonably shocking polo against Manchester B. Our structure was terrible, as ever when we are playing weaker teams. No one can help themselves and we all pile into their what they would call defence. We won none the less giving us lots to work on for our next match Pennine.
Having a win taken from our hands in the final seconds of our last match with Pennine we were hungry for a win. We also couldn't afford to lose to them as this would put us on equal points but losing by a mile on goal difference and out of the promotion slots. We got our heads together this time and worked well as a team to come out just ahead in what was a close match.
Reasonably secure in second place we then saw Pennine play the Welsh Warriors. This was a very close match with lots of close shots but remaining nil nil until the final seconds when Pennine who had possession for the last few minutes getting shots off left right and centre finally put one in the back of the net.
This left the way open for us with two matches to play winning both would put us in 1st place. Our next match against Greenstar was a success, building on the previous matches to give us a comfortable victory.
This put it down to our final match Welsh Warriors. Pennine even though they beat the Warriors were stuck in third. This was the final we could not afford to draw.
Again we found ourselves well matched but we played well as a team to produce two goals in the first half. Two nil down the Welsh warriors fought back well managing to equalise the score. One more goal put us at 3-2 the Warriors fought back well in the final minutes but it wasn't enough.
It was a close fought match but on balance we did play better than them and came out on top of a reasonably tough division 4 this season.
Cheers to Nicky for coming along to reff and coach.
Also thanks to the rest of the team, bet noone thought we would win after our first tournament!
